RoughMix 099 - In the Darkness

Sometimes a lick will do it. I played this chord and then added some rhythm to it, and I had the beginnings of something.

Hi, and welcome to RoughMix 099 which is called "In the Darkness".

This episode focuses on a clip I recorded on my Palm Tungsten, which only records in mono - you do not get much rougher than that.

I was in particular playing around with arpeggios and then some tapping trying to create a sense of rhythm that almost made it sound like more than one instrument was playing. It was all recorded on the fly - what you hear is the first time I played any of this. The words are merely there to try and capture a potential melody line.

In this case the guitar is more like percussion than anything else in particular.

And this brings me to my tip for this episode - feel free to do strange things with your instrument - you will get results that can be surprising and whether good or bad it will teach you something that you can put to use later.

RoughMix 098 - For Sure Inspiration comes when it comes - it cannot be controlled. At least that is my experience. I often sit at the guitar play a few notes and Boom! The muse is there. When this happens, I need to grab my Palm Tungsten and get it down, because I know with absolute certainty that if I do not, it is gone forever - and good or bad if I do not capture it I can never again use it or refer to it. As in many of my recordings I am in my real life and that includes background sounds, interruptions, distractions and the like. Embaressment is a part of the process only because I choose to share it with the public. I have released material that has been slammed by people because they do not get the fact that this is intentionally released in the roughest of rough formats. But when you do it it can be like a diary that no one ready but you. You hold the only key to the lock that holds your musical secrets - so record like crazy and make the most of what you do - it is after all yours! In this episode I remain rough and record embarresing material and I am glad. I have a growing alphabet of material which I am creating which allows me to make references to my own material in a code that only I understand (I added more about this to a comment on RoughMix 097 at RuffMix.com that you can access there.) Songwriting is an adventure of discovery that never stops. I would not be a guitarist if I were not a songwriter. Unless I am playing with a band for a particular purpose I virtually never play music others write. I am always experimenting and creating. It is to me the only real reason to play - and I love it! RuffMix 082 - Tia Barbie video It was shortly after Christmas and we discovered Tia singing while playing with her new dolls - the dolls that she received for Christmas. It took too long to grab the camera and get it all ready so we only got the last 20% or so of what she created. This is to me however the purest form of Rough music. Truly created as it goes along without worrying about form or sense. If I could only find my way back to such a lack of self-consciousness when I try to create music I think my music with be much better, and certainly the lyrics would be much more authentic and closer to the heart. It is my hope that this episode helps to convince the other songwriters out there to share their music in its roughest form right here on RuffMix.com. I love to create music. It is I think about the truest way of expressing one's heart. I am getting closer to being able to be open with it myself even with myself. RoughMIx 072 - Dropping DD Dropping Experiment In this episode of RoughMix I take my guitar and drop both E strings down to D and then make up stuff on the fly. It is only an experiment, and when I do this I never have any idea if the experiment will work out to be anything. I try NOT to limit myself to sounding good, but to playing around as much as I can and to be "in the moment". I will likely never be able to re-create this this, but it will also likely serve as inspiration for something later. We will see. As nearly always I record this on my Palm Tungsten sitting on a table nearby me somewhere. The audio quality is not good, but then this podcast is called RoughMix - and the roughness comes at no extra charge! I will likely not be able to podcast for a few weeks as I have some international travel and will have no guitar (and quite possibly also no internet connection.) I first head to Nottingham, England. I am back from a whirlwind tour of eastern Switzerland where I paid another visit to a Phil Keaggy concert, this time in Chur, Switzerland. The next day I headed to St. Moritz where there was an afternoon up the mountain at a small cabin where we had a guitar workshop with Phil Keaggy (http://PhilKeaggy.com). As I mentioned in episode 063, Phil is one of the best guitarists in the entire world as recognized by his peers. It was more than cool to be able to learn from him with no more than 20 others in a very personal time - with the beauty of the Swiss Alps to boot! In this episode I include some clips from Phil as he shares about his playing and music. Pay special attention to the question I ask about how he saves the stuff he is working on so that he does not forget it. The noise in the background is of the restaurant help cleaning up dishes! In this "landmark" episode 50, (50 means something doesn't it?) I go back in time to what was a rough in the 80s. It is a tune I wrote called "Don't Hesitate" as I was a part of the music group "Pacific". [Use this URL to find videos on Google Video: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Pacific+KKR] It was recorded on a Tascam 4 track recorder which used normal audio cassettes and recorded tracks 1 and 2 on one side and 3 and 4 on the other, so that you could only play back one side 1. This is another tune dropped onto the Palm Tungsten as I was hacking around. You will hear background noise which is for the most part my 4 year old daughter. As for the lyrics that came into this development it happened because I thought that the tune (which came first) sounded like a celebration, and this made me think of a birthday celebration, and then I thought about a "bigger" birthday that would have a potentially larger audience, hence the Christmas context. This tune was written in a van along the winding roads of Southern Spain back in the late 80s as I was on a trip touring with the band Pacific, and missing my wife. The song was written entirely without an instrument in its entirety, something I rarely if ever do. It may be why the words create more rhythm than in some other songs with unsual rhyming patterns. As a reader of the worlds best selling book I at one time in the past decided to choose a key verse from both the Old and New Testaments.
The verses chosen were meant to be personal and not necessarily the most theologically significant. The choice was more like a focus for my life.
The verse I chose from the Old Testament is one from the musician king, David. I was impressed by his focus, the exclusivity of attention he paid to this, and he was known as a man after God's heart. I was eager to attach myself to this idea. The song that resulted from it is called "One Thing."

The song was in this case driven by the lyrics. I got a rough tune pretty quicky and then worked only on the words. Here are the lyrics -

I was was taken by the thought of Mary initially hearing of the news that she would become a mom to God. The other players in this drama were also clueless as to what it really meant.This recording was the intial recording, full of mistakes, to capture the tune as it was at its inception.I here followed the rules I have stated here often. I got it down. It was recorded so that I could later edit and improve. Here the song is played live by a band that had slightly less than 1 hour to practice it and with engineering that was designed for the live audience by non-professionals who mean well and do their best, but do not have a clue as to how to mix for live music for recording.
